When is your next book published, and what is it called?
THAT NIGHT will be published June 17, 2014 in the States and Canada. Other countries will be publishing later. If you follow me on Facebook, I’ll announce publication dates as they are confirmed.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on my fifth book, which is a standalone thriller. I never like to reveal the title until the book is completed (I’m superstitious!) It will hopefully be released in the summer of 2015.
Do I need to read your books in order?
STILL MISSING, NEVER KNOWING, and ALWAYS WATCHING are linked, but you could also read them on their own. THAT NIGHT is a standalone thriller.
Are the towns in your books real places?
All of the towns in STILL MISSING are fictional. The locations in NEVER KNOWING are real places on Vancouver Island, same with in ALWAYS WATCHING, but the hospital where Nadine works, St. Adrian’s, is fictional. The towns in THAT NIGHT are also real, but Rockland Penitentiary is fictional.
Where the heck is Vancouver Island anyway?
Okay, grab a map, find Canada, and look to the left—waaaaay to the left. See that big island on the west coast? That’s us! We are an hour and a half ferry ride from Vancouver—or fifteen minutes on a float plane. The island is 460 kilometers long (290 miles), with a population of over 800,000.
Why do your characters swear so much?
It depends on the character, and how I hear them in my head. Annie in STILL MISSING was very angry, rightfully so, and so she swore a lot. It was just how I heard her telling her story. Sara in NEVER KNOWING didn’t swear as much, neither did Nadine in ALWAYS WATCHING. In THAT NIGHT, Toni definitely swears a lot, but she spent fifteen years in prison and learned a few things along the way.
It could also be slightly related to the fact that I tend to swear quite a bit myself when I’m passionate about something. Now that I have a small daughter, I am working on it.
Do you base your characters on yourself?
No, but I share aspects with all of them. Sometimes they are who I used to be, or how I have felt at times, or who I would like to be, if I had an alternate life. For example, Nadine has a passion for Bonsai trees and has traveled the world and is a psychiatrist. I think Bonsai trees are fascinating and I admire the patience and skill it takes to cultivate one, but I do not have a green thumb and despise gardening. I do hope to travel more in my life, and if I ever went back to school, I’d like to study psychology.
Toni in THAT NIGHT is also partly who I’d like to be in an alternate life. She has a fauxhawk and tattoos, and is way cooler than I am. I was not a rebel in high school like she is, and I didn’t connect with the love of my life until I was thirty-five, though we did go to high school together.
At the time I wrote Annie, I was in a very angry place, so I was able to work through my own pain and questions about my life as her character grew and expressed everything that she was feeling.
When will your books be turned into movies?
I would love them all to be turned into movies, but Hollywood is a slow process. STILL MISSING was optioned but the scriptwriter became too busy with other projects and the option lapsed. NEVER KNOWING is currently optioned by Renny Harlan of Die Hard fame. THAT NIGHT is currently on submission. If you happen to know Ben Affleck or Clint Eastwood, please ask them to call me.
Why is your book published at different times in different countries?
The rights have sold to different publishers around the world, and they all have their own production schedule. Sometimes they take longer because of the translations. My books are always released in Canada and the States at the same time.
Could I send you my books to be signed? Could I have a signed photo of you?
I’m sorry but it’s too complicated to figure out return postage etc. from where I live, and I don’t send out autographed photos.
Where can I get a copy of my book signed?
I will be doing some touring in the States this summer. I will post my schedule soon and I will also announce dates and locations on Facebook.
